You read a statement question on Biological Classification:
Statement 1: Mycoplasma are the smallest living cells known and can survive without oxygen. Statement 2: Mycoplasma possess a rigid cell wall made of peptidoglycan.
Your heart races. You have read page 20 of Class 11 NCERT at least twelve times. You can vividly picture the page in your head: the paragraph sits on the left column, right beneath the blue heading for Kingdom Monera. You even remember highlighting it with your yellow Faber-Castell marker three months ago.
Yet, sitting under the ticking clock, your mind plays tricks on you.
Does Mycoplasma have a cell wall or not? If it lacks a cell wall, how does it maintain its shape? Is Statement 2 correct or incorrect?
You hesitate for 40 seconds. You mark Option C (Both Statement 1 and Statement 2 are correct).
When the answer key releases on Sunday evening, you lose five marks: four marks you expected to earn, plus one negative penalty mark. NCERT line 4 explicitly states: "They lack a cell wall and are the smallest living cells known."
You read that line twelve times. Why did you miss it?
Because looking at a sentence and recognizing it is completely different from pulling that fact out of cold memory when you are tired, sweaty, and stressed.

The 30-Second "Because" Test for Assertion-Reason
Under the compulsory 180-question NEET exam pattern, Assertion-Reason questions have become one of NTA's primary score filters.
Most droppers lose marks here not because they do not know the biology, but because they cannot distinguish between:
- Option 1: Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A.
- Option 2: Both A and R are true, but R is NOT the correct explanation of A.

Assertion (A): The human heart is myogenic. Reason (R): The normal activities of the human heart are regulated intrinsically by nodal tissue.
- Step 1: Is Assertion true? Yes, human heart muscle generates its own rhythm.
- Step 2: Is Reason true? Yes, the SA node and AV node regulate heartbeats intrinsically.
- Step 3: Join with "BECAUSE":
"The human heart is myogenic BECAUSE its normal activities are regulated intrinsically by nodal tissue."
Does the Reason explain the term "myogenic"? Yes (myo = muscle, genic = generated from). Therefore, R is the correct explanation. Mark Option 1.
Now see what happens when examiners test a non-explanatory pair:
Assertion (A): The human heart is myogenic. Reason (R): The SA node is located in the right atrium.
Both statements are 100% true statements from NCERT. But does the SA node being in the right atrium explain why the heart is myogenic? No! The heart would still be myogenic if the pacemaker were located in the left atrium. Mark Option 2.

When a match-the-following question asks about viral capsid shapes, the answer is locked in the diagram footnote.
