If you have said those words over chai after a test, or watched your score drop from a potential 590 to 542 because of 14 negative marks, welcome to the most common trap in competitive exams.
In NEET, every question carries +4 marks for a correct answer, and -1 mark for an incorrect answer. Unattempted questions carry zero.
Because "+4 versus -1" sounds like favorable odds on paper, coaching seniors and YouTube videos often feed students dangerous advice: "NEET is all about attempts. If you eliminate two options, always guess. The probability is in your favor!"
Let us examine what actually happens in real exam conditions.
The Mathematical Illusion of "Tukka"
Suppose you are stuck between Option B and Option D on 10 difficult questions in Physics and Chemistry.
According to pure textbook probability, if you randomly guess between two options, you should get 5 right and 5 wrong:
- 5 correct $\times$ (+4) = +20 marks
- 5 incorrect $\times$ (-1) = -5 marks
- Net gain: +15 marks.
That sounds amazing. So why do real students almost always lose marks?
Because NEET test makers are not writing random distractors. Option B and Option D were not created equal.
NTA question setters know the exact traps students fall into:
- They calculate what answer you get if you forget to square the velocity, and put that number as Option B.
- They calculate what happens if you forget that the work done by friction is negative, and put that number as Option C.
- They know the common misconception between primary and secondary cell walls in Botany, and turn it into Option D.
When a student says "I narrowed it down to two options," in 80% of cases, one of those two options is the engineered trap! You are not guessing with a 50% chance of success. You are walking directly into a bear trap with an 80% chance of failing.

The True Cost of 1 Negative Mark: It Is Not -1, It Is -5
The single biggest psychological mistake is thinking: "Arre, bas 1 mark hi toh gaya."
No. That is not how exam math works.
Look at the difference between leaving a question blank versus marking it wrong:
- If you solve it correctly: +4 marks.
- If you leave it blank: 0 marks.
- If you guess incorrectly: -1 mark.
The difference between getting it right and getting it wrong is 5 marks.
And the difference between leaving it alone and guessing blindly is 1 whole mark subtracted from questions you already solved correctly with your blood and sweat.
If you have 12 negative marks on your scorecard:
- You lost 12 marks directly off your total.
- You missed out on 48 marks because those questions were wrong.
- Your net loss is 60 marks.
Those 12 negative marks are the exact difference between 545 (stuck in a drop year) and 605 (clearing the state government medical college cutoff).

How to Track Your Negative Leak on Sunday
Every Sunday after your test, do not just look at your total score.
Take a blank sheet and write down:

- Net Negative Marks: $-\text{Total}$
